This winter has felt long, but the days are beginning to be lighter for longer and there is a glimmer of hope that spring could finally be on its way.
Having the motivation to lace up your trainers or to roll out that yoga mat is not always easy when it is dark outside, and you can’t bear to brace the icy weather. Covid has made a lot of us have to change the way we look after ourselves and keeping active is one of the best ways to help your mental health in check.
Here are a few tips for getting it done in the colder weather:
- If you are going outside, dress for the weather – not just layers for the cold but stay dry as well.
- If it is dark outside then wear bright colours or reflective clothing so others, particularly motorists, can clearly notice you.
- Get a buddy – you are more likely to commit to getting out if you have someone else relying on you to show up. Also, walks or runs go far quicker when having a good catch up with a friend.
- Sign up to a challenge – loads of charities have events over the warmer months from 5km runs to blow up obstacle races, so get your name down and get training, it is even more fun in a group.
- Now classes are starting back up again book to try something new! Our partners at Freedom Leisure have centres in Bexhill, Rye and Hastings with a host of classes just waiting for you to try out.
- Alternatively, working out at home has never been more accessible, with thousands of videos online and apps to download. From Joe Wicks HIIT classes to Yoga with Adriene, there is something for all levels. The NHS has a variety of online videos from 10-minute bursts to 45 minutes strength sessions.
- Schedule in your activity like you would a work meeting! Tell the people in your house you are doing it. Write it in your weekly calendar.
Keeping active is great for both your physical and mental health and as Covid restrictions lift, we hope to be able to start offering a wider variety of classes and activities once again. Continue checking the Active Rother website for updates on what we have available.
