As we grow older, staying physically active becomes more important than ever. Loss of balance or falls are not an inevitable part of ageing and can be avoided.

Active Rother and its partners have identified Bexhill as having an especially high prevalence of falls, and we want to help residents reduce their risk of experiencing a fall.

By continuing to be active through strength and balance movements, adults of all ages can maintain their independence, stay connected to others, and enjoy life with greater energy, health and peace of mind.

    Strength exercises

Strength exercises are a great way of maintaining your strength and balance. Using light weights, resistance bands, or even bodyweight movements like standing from a chair without using your hands, can help preserve muscle mass that naturally declines with age.

Maintaining muscle strength supports everyday activities such as walking, carrying bags, doing household chores and climbing stairs.

As well as staying social and meeting up with friends and family. It can also reduce and manage the risk of health conditions like osteoporosis, arthritis, and type 2 diabetes.

    Balance activities

Balance activities are also important. Simple exercises like standing on one leg, heel-to-toe walking, or participating in classes like tai chi or gentle yoga can improve coordination and stability.

These movements can help you feel more secure on your feet and keep your independence so you can continue doing the things you enjoy.

    Exercises to keep you strong

Many strength and balance exercises can be done at home or within your local community. You can find exercises to do at home on Youtube such as this Strength and balancing exercises for older people’ video.
