Becoming a runner...
Charlotte's story

Charlotte is a member of the Bexhill Beginners Running Class. Before 2014, with no prior experience of running, little did she know that today she would have three running medals to her name.

Before 2014, ‘running’ was something that other people did. I had always said I'd never be able to do it. I tried to run. I would run as fast as I could for as long as I could, but I hated it and didn't consider it as being ‘proper’ running.

At the beginning of last year I had signed up to do a 5k run at the end of July. I had no real faith I’d show up at the start line, complete it, or that I'd be able to stop myself from fleeing in the opposite direction to avoid the crushing embarrassment of my big red face. I bought some trainers and by May had probably only used them twice. This wasn't for me, I thought.

So, I decided to sign up for Natasha's beginners running course to find out the right way to run and the right way to push myself. I found that after only a couple of weeks that running alongside others and pushing each other through run-walk intervals was the best motivation. We laughed, cheered each other on and admired each other’s progress. I realised how personal running goals are what count - you don't need to measure yourself against others.

"I can tell you, no matter how big and red your face, a running event is the equivalent of one massive high five."

I can tell you, no matter how big and red your face, a running event is the equivalent of one massive high five. After gaining my 5k medal I wanted another - so signed up to a 10k in the September. Then swept up in my double medal glory and riding the wave of adrenaline, I signed up to the Poppy Half marathon. What was I thinking? But I did it. The euphoria of seeing my proud mum, dad and niece at the finishing line was enough to keep me going.

Natasha is one of my inspirations. She cultivated a group bouncing with positive energy and has made running so accessible. I've learnt there’s no such thing as ‘proper’ running - and let's face it, you're always faster than those sat on the sofa. Going from nothing to three medals in less than a year - anyone who knew me pre-summer 2014 could tell you I'm really lazy. I’m a sitting on the sofa with a blanket and a Yorkie bar kind of girl.

My last and resonating message is this (and I know it's cliche) but honestly, if I can do it, truly anyone can, and I'd challenge you to go on one of Natasha's beginners running courses and still think otherwise.
